My photo-based project titled May You Be Thrown from a Horse and Sustain a Broken Thigh (referencing a 1928 incident preventing founding Loblaws patriarch T.P Loblaw from attending the grand opening of the company’s Toronto headquarters), examines the socio-economic structure that maintains the Loblaw empire in my community. This research forms a timely, original series of images exploring Loblaws' power by re-conceptualizing the iconic Canadian corporation as a true empire; the imperial ruler of Canada's food system, and myself, its subject. The research and development process for this project will enable me to create a large series of singular satirical images enabling new public conceptions of the specific power the Loblaw corporation holds over Canadian life today, as well as the frailties that could topple it.
